Into Africa - January 2024
The morning after Jo and I arrived in Africa, we were off on a brief safari via both boat and open topped jeep through Chobe National Park in Botswana. The huge expanses of water, grassland and forest were totally alive with an abundance of wildlife. Our favourite moment was when a family of elephants walked across the road right in front of us, babies staying close to the parents. We were also excited to see giraffes, crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes, impalas, antelopes, baboons, eagles, vultures and many other kinds of birds. The lions were sleeping off their heavy night in the shade, but a couple of them were spotted!
The following day in Zimbabwe we walked through an Eden of tropical trees to take in the breathtaking view of the spectacular Victoria Falls, originally described by the local inhabitants as "The Smoke that Thunders"... The first sight was totally awe inspiring, with water literally thundering down beside us and the spellbinding light of the main falls enticing us through the rocky gorge into its magical realm...These massive falls are even taller than those of Niagara, and create an extraordinary rainbow through clouds of sparkling spray.
That evening we headed off into the wilderness for a tribal dinner with some exciting dancing, drumming and singing to celebrate New Year's Eve...
We left the historical Victoria Falls Hotel the following morning to fly to Cape Town. There we enjoyed riding via cable car to the top of the impressive Table Mountain. From there we had the most beautiful views of both Cape Town and other mountains too, partially shrouded in wisps of mist. There is a fabulously desolate and rugged feel on top as you wander through the rocks of its craggy heights.
The following day, friends Vanessa and Allan took us out to see the stunning views of the mountainous peninsular and the deep blue of the ocean.
After exploring some of Cape Town itself, from the old balconied houses to the thriving waterfront replete with shops, restaurants and more brilliant tribal dancing, we prepared to return home.
Many thanks to Thames Travel and everyone who helped us on such an amazingly unforgettable experience.
